 Target Group Technical officers with responsibility for field data collection, hazard monitoring, emergency response, contingency, and risk mitigation who will have responsibility to support data collection for the R3i Disaster Risk Reduction project in their country

 Objectives To provide the participants an appreciation of field-based data acquisition methods that can be used to build and update GIS spatial databases

 Learning Outcome
  • To expose participants to the use of GPS/GIS equipment
  • To explore how to use GPS/GIS for rapid field data collection on critical facilities
  • To provide participants with an appreciation of how to use GPS/GIS for incident mapping
 Content
  • Global Navigation Satellite Systems: components, modes of operation, infrastructural need, and sources of data
  • Terrestrial systems: establishment of controls detailed surveying, combination with satellite methods
  • Map datums and map projections systems
  • Design of data collection systems using integrated GPS/GIS equipment
  • Accuracy and quality assessment
  • Creating shapefiles from GPS field data
