Senior managers of National Disasters Management Organizations (Planning Department, Works Department, Mapping agencies, Finance Department etc) with responsibility for Disaster Risk Reduction in R3i project participants’ states. No knowledge of GIS software is required the participants should however be computer literate

Objectives |
Provide the participants with an understanding of GIS concepts and principles and how they are used in hazard mapping and vulnerability assessment

Learning Outcome |
- To expose participants to the use of GIS concepts and application in Disaster Risk Management.
- To explore how GIS applications are built in support of landslide/flood risk modelling.
- To provide participants with an appreciation of resources required and challenges in the use of geoinformatics in support of hazard mapping and vulnerability assessment

Content |
- Global Navigation Satellite Systems: components, modes of operation, infrastructural need, and sources of data
- Terrestrial systems: establishment of controls detailed surveying, combination with satellite methods
- Map datums and map projections systems
- Design of data collection systems using integrated GPS/GIS equipment
- Accuracy and quality assessment
- Creating shapefiles from GPS field data
